Purpose  
The Welding Inspector will perform inspections of welded assemblies to verify that they meet required standards.
 
General Information 
The job is physically demanding, requiring manual lifting, carrying, bending and walking over rough terrain; working around heavy traffic, dust, noise, fumes, moving machinery, and working in all weather conditions. Must pass the initial vision test to earn certification, and must also pass a vision test each time they renew.


Typical roles and responsibilities 

  • Perform visual inspections of welded assemblies (base materials and consumable welding materials) to verify that standards are met.  Apply knowledge of welding principles and metallurgical properties.
  • Ensure that appropriate metal fillers are used for base materials or in combination of base materials
  • Verify and ensure that appropriate welding equipment is used for the work and that equipment has the capability to meet appropriate requirements of the work.
  • Verify and ensure that the welding procedures are as specified, and that welding is performed in compliance with the applicable procedure.
  • Witness and supervise performance testing of outside agencies.
  • Verify documentation of procedure qualification test results
  • Document results of inspections
  • Ensure re-qualification requirements are maintained
  • Interpret drawing and documents
  • Inspect and test welded joints of work currently in progress and work that is completed.
  • Inspect to ensure that correct dimensions, joint strength, bead formation and weld penetration are in conformance with blueprints and work order specifications.
  • Inspect and examine joint to detect flaws such as cracks, Cole weld, spatter and undercuts through magnification.
  • Analyzes x-ray photographs of weld joints; may weld, test and inspect metal samples to determine most effective welding process and technique.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.Must follow and enforce all safety standards.


Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) diploma, Valid Texas Driver’s license, valid Certificate of Welding Inspector (CWI), ability to work at heights with harness.
